With all this FP talk about the new Focus RS it reminded me about something that happened a couple weeks ago.
My good friend Chris suddenly posted a few of his cars for sale a few months back saying "there's an opportunity I can't pass up". This piqued the interest of all of us his fellow gearheads, what would cause Chris to sell of two 914's, his beloved E34 M5, and his SVT Cobra Mustang?
Well, he let the cat out the bag two weeks ago: Escort Cosworth RS.
I correctly guessed it knowing his love for rare Ford's, but made me swear to silence since he really wanted to surprise the rest of us. It's one of the 18 imported by Sun International in the 90's. It's a later T25 car instead of the crazy early T34 cars, but it makes it more usable than the "Big Turbo" T34's.
He's got some big plans for it, so if you see a Cossie bombing around the Mount Vernon to Anacortes area, wave, you'll probably just be a blur but he'll appreciate it.
Either way, on to the pics, it's freaking rad. I love those wheels.
Pre-delivery:
Once he got it he put the mid-wing on it that the previous owner had, now it looks like a proper Cossie.

It's gorgeous, but man, I don't want to be him when Customs comes knocking...
Or were those on Show and Display? I don't think so...

Your buddy's unicorn has a first name, it's C-O-S-T-In .. your buddy's unicorn has a second name, it's D-U-C-K-Worth ...
Ahem. Sorry. I seem to be having a sort of seizure .

It has a US VIN, NTHSA paperwork, and the all important customs paperwork. Sun International did grey market importing in the 90's for these at a huge cost, they were only able to secure orders for 18 of them from buyers. It's been in the US, registered and titled, for most of it's life.

Sun International imports cars from various countries and somehow gets around the 25 year ban. I think they might modify the vehicles to comply with the US's laws.

What model year is it?
According to the NHTSA 94-95 model year Cosworths are fully legal to import and own provided you have all the proper documentation and do it via a registered importer.

YESSSSSSSS.

Fair enough. I see far too many "totally legal, bro" cars and then watch them get taken away. It's got its papers in order, then all is well here.

Welp, color me jealous...

I believe it's a 94 since it has the later T-25 turbo motor.
They grey-market importer crash tested a few of these so that may be how it ended up on the list.

Sorry, haven't taken a look at that list in a while. apparently Sun International managed to get these in at one point. Lots of people take short cuts, though. you don't want to own one that someone didn't get all their paperwork done on.

those wheels are pretty sweet. although i could probably do without the OZ branding on them.

I had the same fears with my grey market 1991 500E, but it was another of the late grey market cars that were issued US VIN numbers. It scared me since it was a 1991 car that was registered as a 1993 (the first year the 500E was imported to the US), but I didn't have any issues with it.

I dig it. Maybe if the font was a bit smaller, yeah, but they're period-correct.

yep, I'd probably sell all my cars too!

Thankfully he kept is 3.2l Corrado project he's restoring from the ground up with a 0-mile VR6 motor and a 3.2l stroker kit, as well has his trusty Ford truck to get around in.

That's been my dream car since I was 9.
I AM SO JEALOUS.

Nice find. It probably wasn't very cheap though. The headlights look a bit weird but I guess the originals aren't street legal in US.

mine had the big wing too, totally love these
oh... mine was a matchbox...

Really liked the look pre-wing
![]() 01/21/2015 at 12:15 |

I liked it, but that RS needs to have that wing on to look the business. Plus in the early 90's every one of them had it mounted and he's going for a period-correct look on it.
